BRAUN SILK-EXPERT IPL BD5008 WHITE + BRAUN FACE
What is IPL?
Q: How does IPL technology work? How does Braun Silk-expert IPL work?
A: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is an innovative light-based technology that targets the hair re-growth cycle. Hair growth occurs in three phases:
- Phase 1: the active growth phase, anagen, is when the hair stems from the root and surfaces. The hair gets longer until it eventually stops growing.
- Phase 2: the hair follicle enters the transition phase, catagen. This is usually a very short phase and leads to the final stage.
- Phase 3: the resting phase, telogen, signals the end of the hair growth cycle - with the hair naturally falling out. The cycle then starts all over again with a new hair.
Braun Silk-expert IPL emits pulses of light beneath the surface of the skin that target the melanin in the hair follicle. The melanin heats up, pushes the hair follicle into resting phase and the hair is shed naturally over time. With continued, periodic use, the light energy helps prevent unwanted hair from reaching the skin’s surface and re-growth is permanently reduced.
Step 1: To begin with, you will need to removethe hair with your preferred hair removal method from the area you are treating. Always start with clean, dry skin.
Step 2: Plug the device into a power socket. Once the LED power bars light up, your Braun Silk-expert IPL is ready to go. Bear in mind that the device will heat up slightly when in use. Note, before your first treatment, we recommend you test your skin for reaction to Braun Silk-expert IPL on a small area of skin on the body part you plan to treat. Wait 48 hours to examine the test area.
Step 3: If the skin appears normal after 48 hours, begin your first treatment. To use the Braun Silk-expert IPL product, select your preferred correct mode (Normal, Gentle or Extra Gentle) and glide it across your skin for quick and continuous application. The 3 mode setting allows the manual regulation of light intensity for personalized and convenient usage across body areas.
If a skin reaction develops, discontinue using the device and consult your physician. Do not treat the patch tested area for at least one week after the test.
Q: What are the benefits of IPL vs. other methods?
A: Of today’s popular methods of hair removal, all have their pros and cons and none delivers on both terms consistently:
- § There are the surface methods, like shaving, where results last for a few days at best and hairs can still be visible beneath the skin.
- § There are root methods, like epilation and waxing, that remove the hair from the root and give smooth skin results that last up to four weeks.
- § Light based hair removal methods like laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) are newer methods of hair removal that provide long lasting results. IPL effectively reduces the hair re-growth, giving you permanently visible hair removal.
Q: What is the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?
A: Sometimes consumers use ‘IPL’ and ‘Laser’ interchangeably as generic names for light based hair removal devices e.g. calling all light based hair removal devices laser hair removal. The mode of action is the same for both technologies (targeting the melanin in the hair follicle) and in terms of reported hair removal results, there is no principle difference. Individual efficacy depends on other factors like overall treatment regimen, energy output, hair color, and even coverage.
The key difference is the type of light used to achieve results. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broad band pulsed light source vs. laser which is a monochromatic coherent light source.
Q: Is IPL as efficient as laser hair removal?
A: Sometimes consumers use ‘IPL’ and ‘Laser’ interchangeably as generic names for light based hair removal devices, e.g. calling all light based hair removal devices laser hair removal. The mode of action is the same for both technologies (targeting the melanin in the hair follicle) and in terms of reported hair removal results, there is no principle difference. Individual efficacy really depends on other factors like overall treatment regimen, energy output, hair color, and even coverage.
Q: Does IPL hurt?
A: The discomfort level is minimal, however it differs from person to person. Some people don’t feel much discomfort, while for others it could be slightly uncomfortable.
Q: How long will it take to see results?
A: The typical hair growth cycle varies between individuals and also between body areas (underarm, lower leg and bikini). It can take up to 18-24 months, depending on the body area. Since only hair in their growing phase are susceptible to treatment with light, it is important to do multiple treatments to achieve continuously smooth skin. For this reason, we recommend a start-up phase of 4-12 weekly treatments to achieve optimum results. If you no longer see hair growing, you do not need to complete the full 12 weekly treatments. You can switch to maintenance treatments.
Q: Is it necessary to keep using Braun Silk-expert IPL even after completing the recommended treatments?
A: After completing your start-up phase, one can continue to treat according to his/her needs. Some people need to treat only once every 1-2 months and some once every 6-12 months.
Q: Can Braun IPL be used on a daily basis?
A: We recommend that the Braun Silk-expert IPL device is used according to the usage instructions. Since only hairs in their growing phase are susceptible to treatment with light, daily usage would not be recommended as the hair life cycle won’t be significantly different from one day to another.
Why choose a Braun IPL device?
Q: What are the benefits of the SensoAdapt™ technology?
A: Skin tone can vary across the body and even across one body area. For example, our skin tone is darker on areas that are more exposed to the sun and on areas that are physiologically darker, such as the groin and armpits.
SensoAdapt™ is an integrated skin tone sensor that continuously measures the differences in skin tone (80 times per second) and automatically adjusts the light intensity to the optimum level. So, it’s always the perfect balance between energy and safety.
Many IPL devices don’t have a skin tone sensor, leaving users to compare their skin tone to paper charts in order to set the energy level; therefore, leaving it up to the user to get right or wrong – with only limited guidance on the correct setting based on what they assume to be the colour of their skin.
Q What is the benefit of the 3 mode setting (normal, gentle and extra gentle) additionally to SensoAdapt™?
A: The 3 mode setting allows the manual regulation of light intensity for personalized and convenient usage across body areas.
Q What are the differences between the three modes?
A: Normal setting works with full power for effective treatment. Gentle setting works with reduced energy, still in relation to measured skin colour and is recommended for sensitive areas or first time users. It’s even feasible to reduce the light intensity to a minimum level when choosing the Extra Gentle setting.
Q: What does this mean for efficiency?
A: The treatment is effective for each of the three settings. Depending on light intensity (power) and individual conditions (hair color, skin color, depth of the hair follicle and body site), efficacy can vary. For lower energy levels (gentle and extra gentle) it might take more time to see first results.
Q: What is the maximum energy released by each mode?
For Normal and Gentle setting, the SensoAdapt™ skin tone sensor adjusts the optimum light intensity for the measured skin tone. The Extra Gentle setting reduces the energy to a minimum level and works with skin tone detection only, no adjustment of energy level.
Q: We noticed that the initial Braun IPL product and the new launch are similar, where has the increase to 300,000 flashes come from? How were you able to increase them from 120,000 to 300,000?
A: Overall, products of this category are undergoing continuous development. The higher number of flashes is one of these improvements.
Q: What is the life span of the Braun Silk-expert IPL device?
A: The light bulb in the Braun Silk-expert IPL is capable of producing 300,000 flashes, which depending on the area(s) of the body the user is treating, approximately equates to:
- § 15 years* of full body treatments OR
- § 35 years* on smaller treatment areas such as lower legs, underarms and upper lip
* Calculation based on lifetime of the lamp. Number of years can exceed actual lifetime of the device.
Q: What is the key difference between Philips Lumea and Braun Silk-expert IPL? Is there a difference between Braun Silk-expert IPL and the SmoothSkin Gold IPL?
A: We’re aware of other products in the market and we respect all competition. Therefore we will not comment on their performance or features. What is important to understand is that Braun Silk-expert brings a great proposition with regards to efficiency, safety and ergonomics thanks to its intelligent SensoAdaptTM technology and advanced product design.
- SensoAdapt™ is an integrated skin tone sensor that continuously reads the skin, up to 80 times/second and adjusts the light intensity to the optimum level;
- It significantly improves consumer experience, as it completely eliminates the process of matching skin with colour charts;
- This is the fastest IPL technology available at high energy levels.
Braun Silk-expert’s efficacy has been proven in a clinical study** where 94% of women reported that the product ‘really worked’ and provided noticeable results after three months usage.
** Clinical study among 50 women, UK 2013/14
Q: What is the difference between Venus Naked Skin and Braun Silk-expert IPL?
We continuously develop our products to offer latest technology to consumer. Braun Silk
-expert comes with latest technology and improvement areas vs. Venus Naked Skin as following:
- Speed (less time between single flashes) thus faster treatment and better gliding
- Integrated and automatic skin tone sensor for continuous skin tone measurement and automatic setting to optimal light intensity. VNS had a removable sensor with automatic level setting, not continuously, but only once per treatment.
- No skin contact gel necessary for more convenient usage.
- Convenient size of hand piece, ergonomically designed
- More flashes, higher lamp life time (300,000 flashes vs. 50,000 flashes)
Q: Is there a cordless version available?
A: No. We purposely designed Braun Silk-expert IPL to be mains powered for uninterrupted treatment and maximum power, because the batteries of today are not yet good enough for the high energy demands of IPL treatments. We wanted to spare women the hassle of having to charge their device whilst in the middle of their treatment or going to use the device only to find the battery had run out.
Q: Is there a need to use a protecting gel?
A: Braun Silk-expert IPL works without the need of additional lotions or gels.
Skin care and safety
Q: How should I care for my skin before and after IPL?
A: To begin with, you will need to remove the hair with your preferred hair removal method from the area you are treating. Always start with clean, dry skin.
There are no special steps needed after IPL treatment. If you have very sensitive skin you might want to take care not to expose treated skin to additional stress like using a hot tub or sauna. (please also see the question on how IPL works)
Please consult the usage instructions each time when in doubt.
Q: Do I need to stay out of the sun before and after IPL?
If your skin tone gets too dark due to sun or tanning booths/solarium exposure, IPL treatment might not function anymore. Since Braun Silk-expert IPL SensoAdaptTM technology scans the skin tone up to 80 times/second, the device will inform you if your skin has become too dark for treatment.
Please consult the usage instructions each time when in doubt.
Q: Will I get ingrown hairs?
A: IPL is the method to prevent ingrown hairs because it prevents hairs reaching skin surface.
Q: I have red hair, why can’t I use an IPL device?
A: Braun Silk-expert IPL and IPL in general is not suitable for everyone. It is most effective on light to medium skin tones with hair ranging from natural blonde to dark brown / black. The device is not effective on very blonde, red, grey or white hair where the smaller amount of melanin would not absorb the light energy.
Q: Why isn’t IPL suitable for darker skin tones?
A: Since dark skin contains more melanin, it absorbs more than the safe, recommended amount of light energy which may cause more discomfort.
Q: Is IPL suitable for intimate areas?
A: IPL is safe for use on the bikini line, but it isn’t suitable for the genital area where the skin may have a darker colour and / or greater hair density which would absorb more light energy and may cause discomfort.
Q: Can I use IPL on my face?
A: Braun Silk-expert IPL is safe for use on the face below the cheekbones; it shouldn’t be used near the eyes and along the forehead. It works effectively on the upper lip, chin and jawline. We recommend doing a patch test before use.
Q: Is it suitable for men to use?
A: Men can use Braun Silk-expert IPL from the shoulders down (chest, back, arms, stomach and legs). It should not be used on the face, neck or genital area.
Q: Do I need to wear goggles when using IPL? Is the flash of the product dangerous for my eyes?
A: There is no need to wear goggles when using Braun Silk-expert IPL. The skin contact sensors ensure that the device can only be triggered when in contact with the skin, and the light visible during the treatment is perfectly safe.
Q: Is IPL safe to use on teenagers?
A: As the product has not been tested among this group, it should not be used.
Q: Is Braun Silk-expert IPL suitable for use by pregnant women?
A: Pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding are not recommended to use IPL devices, as the devices have generally not been tested with this target group.
Q: Are there areas where IPL cannot be used?
A: The device is not intended for use on the following areas:
- Around the eyes and near the eyebrows
- On nipples, areolas, intimate areas and the inside of the nostrils and ears
- Men must not use it on intimate areas and face or neck
- Over or near anything artificial like silicone implants, pacemakers, subcutaneous injection ports (insulin dispenser) or piercings
- On moles, freckles, large veins, darker pigmented areas, scars or skin anomalies without consulting your doctor. This can result in a burn and a change in skin colour, which makes it potentially harder to identify skin-related diseases (e.g. skin cancer)
- On warts, tattoos or permanent make-up. This can result in a burn and a change in skin colour (hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation)
- On areas where you use long-lasting deodorants. This can result in skin reactions
Note: This list is not exhaustive. If you are not sure whether you can use the appliance we advise you to consult a doctor.
